“Painting is what really ignites the fire in my heart. Since the first time I touched a paintbrush, I never let go.”

Some people spend their lives searching for the thing that sets their soul on fire. Layane found hers more than twenty-five years ago, the moment she picked up a paintbrush.

Artist. Dentist. Nature lover. Adventurer. Brazilian at heart and Cape Cod local by choice.

“I am originally from Brazil. Home is Brazil and the Cape, where I first came to the U.S. and made lifelong friends.”

We met before sunrise at Long Beach in Centerville on the very first day of Summer. The beach was nearly empty, the sky was deep blue, slowly turning shades over the quiet water. Before we even started photographing, Layane was already collecting inspiration for her next painting. She wandered the shoreline with the biggest smile, photographing the sunrise, picking up shells, soaking in every detail around her.

Her joy is contagious. Her smile never leaves her face.

On the drive, we talked almost nonstop. The day before, we’d already spent nearly an hour on the phone, and somehow it still felt like we’d only scratched the surface. Layane has a gift for storytelling. Every memory she shares unfolds full of Brazilian warmth, humor, and honesty, leaving you wanting to hear the next chapter.

Nature isn’t simply something she paints. It’s where she comes alive. That curiosity spills into every part of her life.

“My best day would include me going out in nature, possibly seeing a wild animal or a cool bird, and coming home to paint it.”

Layane originally imagined America as one chapter of her story before returning home to Brazil. But life had other plans.

She met the love of her life while in Cape Cod, built a beautiful family, and slowly created a home that now stretches across two places.

Today, she balances the life she built with the life she’s always dreamed of creating.

“I have been painting for over 25 years and now I am slowly transitioning from dentistry to full-time artist.”

That leap may sound intimidating to many people. To Layane, it feels like freedom.

“Freedom is my main value. I absolutely hate people deciding things for me or telling me what to do. I live it through the pursuit of my art. Freedom is the power to choose, and I choose to pursue art daily.”

If there’s one thing you’ll quickly learn about Layane; it’s this: she doesn’t quit.

One family ski trip proved exactly that. While everyone else learned quickly, she stayed behind on the practice hill, determined to figure it out before going home.

“I didn’t leave the practice hill until I could learn to turn.”

By the end of the day, everyone had gone back to the hotel. Everyone except Layane.

She made a bet with a few fellow beginners that she’d finally ride the ski lift by herself.

“I thought to myself, I am really crazy, but I am also really proud of my courage.”

The ride up was terrifying. Getting off the lift? Even worse. But there was only one way home. Down the mountain.

“I wiped down so bad and probably didn’t die because I had a helmet on…I thought I was going to break my whole body… but I didn’t fall going down.”

At the bottom stood her husband, searching for her in the fading light.

“…as I arrived at the end of the hill , so so proud of myself, I see my husband walking looking for me at the bottom — it was night time! And I was so happy that at least I got one witness that I really went downhill skiing by myself!…”

She still laughs telling the story. And somehow, that story says everything about who she is.

Not fearless. Brave enough to do it scared.

Ask Layane about the most daring thing she’s ever done, and she won’t mention moving countries or changing careers. She’ll tell you something much bigger.

“Having kids! The wildest ride that there is. Raise other humans… so much love involved, so much fear of messing up, so much learning! Yes, for the love of, I would do it again if I could!”

Her determination showed itself again while training for the Boston Marathon.

She had less than five months to prepare while raising a family, working, and fundraising for the race.

“I never missed a single workout or run.”

Every weekend became another opportunity to reach the goal. Teaching painting classes. Raffling artwork. Running. Working. Showing up.

“I did it!!”

She is Daring all the way…and her strength has No Limits!

After the beach, we headed back to Layane’s home studio.

Nestled in a sun-filled room overlooking the trees, it’s the kind of place where creativity seems to breathe on its own.

Her newest paintings surrounded us while we laughed with her husband, swapped chicken stories, and talked about how funny it is that chickens somehow become therapy, while George, their Golden Retriever, ran around the yard looking for a chance to be photographed.

We also talked about something many artists understand: how our minds are always creating. Always dreaming. Always overflowing with ideas. And how, with time, we learn something just as valuable. To slow down. To notice. To appreciate the moment we’re standing in before racing toward the next one.

That’s the heart of Layane’s story. Not just chasing dreams. But living them, one brushstroke at a time.

It takes courage to paint. To trust your vision and let your hands tell the story.

On her bucket list:

“Paint full time and never retire from it!”

If she could wake up anywhere in the world she’d choose one of Brazil.

“I would be in one of the beautiful beaches in Brazil with warm water, fine sand, amazing weather! My kids, my husband, my mom would be there. The very 1st thing I would do would be to wake up earlier for a long walk at the beach, watching the sunrise and taking a million photos to paint later. I have done that a few times!”

I live by “It is better to regret the things that I did than the things I didn’t do”.

Layane reminds us that adventure doesn’t always look like climbing mountains.

Sometimes it’s moving across the world. Changing careers after decades. Training for a marathon. Learning to ski after forty. Choosing creativity every single day. Or simply waking before sunrise to walk a quiet beach, camera in hand, collecting tiny pieces of beauty that will one day become art.

The most daring people aren’t always the loudest.

Sometimes they’re the ones quietly creating the life they’ve always imagined. One sunrise. One painting. One brave decision at a time.
